FINE ART & ILLUSTRATION BY JEFF VOELTNER
Original graphite drawing on paper
After a day of solemn deliveries—handing off grand invitations with all the pomp and absurdity Wonderland requires—the Footmen finally step away from their posts. Now, at day's end, they share a quiet, well-deserved respite, unwinding together in perfect ease. It's a rare glimpse of Wonderland's most dutiful servants off the clock—relaxed, reflective, and simply enjoying the calm after the chaos.
This is a framed graphite drawing/study for the creation of an oil painting in the 'Portraits of Wonderland' series - a series of paintings capturing the wonderful personalities of Lewis Carroll's marvelous book, Alice's Adventures in Wonderland'.
From Jeff: The Footmen are such memorable minor players in the Duchess's chaotic household—the Fish delivering the Queen's croquet invite with grave formality, the Frog receiving it with equal absurdity. I wanted to give them a well-deserved breather here, placing them in their ideal habitat at the end of the day: a peaceful pond where they can unwind, catch a few bugs, and sip "tea" lit by fireflies. It's a chance to show these hardworking servants in a relaxed and unguarded light—enjoying the simple pleasure of downtime after all the powdered-wig pomp. In this series, even the supporting cast gets their moment to shine, and I love capturing what these characters might be doing outside of their expected roles.
