FINE ART & ILLUSTRATION BY JEFF VOELTNER
Original graphite drawing on paper
A bewildered Red Queen, caught utterly off guard after accepting a seemingly thoughtful slice of cake "From Alice"—a gentle but pointed repayment for all those endless lessons in propriety, etiquette, and running to stay in place. The unflappable governess of Looking-Glass land, always quick with a correction and a reminder of the rules, now finds herself in a most unqueenly conundrum, thanks to a bit of Wonderland logic turned right back on her.
This is a framed graphite drawing/study for the creation of an oil painting in the 'Portraits of Wonderland' series - a series of paintings capturing the wonderful personalities of Lewis Carroll's marvelous book, Alice's Adventures in Wonderland'.
From Jeff:
The Red Queen from Through the Looking-Glass is the epitome of stern authority—formal, pedantic, the concentrated essence of a strict governess, forever instructing and correcting with cold precision, yet not without a certain fairness. I wanted to have fun flipping the script here: giving her a "gift" from Alice that echoes her own world of size-shifting absurdity, turning the tables so the one who dispenses lessons suddenly receives one. It's a playful symmetry in the series, capturing that rare instant when even the most exacting figure is left speechless and bewildered by the topsy-turvy kindness of Wonderland.
